Overview

Channel 4 is a UK broadcaster that commissions most of its programmes from independent production companies. It runs its apprenticeships through 4Skills, a training programme it started in 2020.

The apprenticeships

Most Channel 4 apprenticeships are at Level 2 or 3 and last 12 to 24 months. Apprentices work on real projects across the business, in areas such as operations in Manchester and commissioning, while they complete their qualifications. Channel 4 says the programme is tailored for people from underrepresented groups.

It’s a growing programme. In January 2025, 36 new apprentices joined, bringing the total to 59, and Channel 4 recruited eight higher-level apprenticeships (Levels 4 to 7) to start in September 2025. Since 2020, it has hired 111 apprentices across the UK.

Other ways in

4Skills also includes a Production Training Scheme, a year-long, fully paid placement at independent production companies, and free virtual work experience aimed at 14 to 24 year olds.

What they don’t tell you

Channel 4 doesn’t publish apprentice pay or entry requirements on its overview pages, so check each role carefully.

Our tips for Channel 4

Our own tips, not information from the employer.

  • Want to make TV rather than work at a broadcaster? Look at Channel 4's Production Training Scheme too. It's a year-long, paid placement at independent production companies, and it's separate from the apprenticeships.
  • Under 25? Channel 4's free virtual work experience is open to everyone and aimed at 14 to 24 year olds. It's a good way to learn how TV works before you apply.
  • Channel 4 has offices outside London, including Manchester, so check where each role is.
  • Pay and entry requirements aren't on the overview pages, so read each role carefully and ask if they're not clear.
