Overview

Kier builds and looks after roads, railways, schools, hospitals and other buildings across the UK. Its apprenticeships run from Level 2 right up to degree level, and they’re all permanent jobs, not fixed-term contracts that end when your training does.

Level 2 and 3 apprenticeships

These are hands-on roles where you learn on the job. Kier lists apprenticeships in:

  • business support
  • civil engineering
  • highways maintenance (including winter maintenance and emergency response)
  • customer service
  • building services (heating, ventilation and plumbing systems)
  • planning and estimating

You spend about 80% of your time working and 20% on your qualification, at college or in online sessions with your training provider. You’ll need a Level 2 in maths and English before you finish. If you don’t have them yet, your training provider will help you get them.

Degree apprenticeships

Kier’s degree apprenticeships take four to five years and end with a BSc. You go to university in block weeks, and Kier pays your tuition and accommodation fees, so you don’t build up student debt.

Route University Entry requirements
Construction management Sheffield Hallam 2 A levels (A–C), a Level 3 or a T Level (merit)
Quantity surveying Sheffield Hallam 2 A levels (A–C), a Level 3 or a T Level (merit)
Civil engineering Coventry 96 UCAS points incl. maths or physics; GCSE maths at 5

Kier also lists degree routes in building services, electro-mechanical engineering, environmental, digital construction and design management, with entry requirements in each job advert.

What they don’t tell you

Kier doesn’t publish apprentice pay on its apprenticeships page, so ask about it at interview. There’s also no fixed start date, so set up job alerts on its careers site.
