Overview

Barratt Redrow builds homes across England, Scotland and Wales, under names including Barratt Homes, David Wilson Homes and Redrow. Its apprenticeships run from learning a trade on site to studying for a degree while you work.

Trade apprenticeships

This is for school leavers who want to become a qualified bricklayer or site carpenter. In Scotland you can also train as a plumber or electrician. How it works depends on where you live:

Where Programme Length
England and Wales Level 2 Intermediate Trade Apprenticeship, with the option of Level 3 18 months
Scotland Modern Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 6) 4 years

In England, you train with Stephenson College in Coalville, Leicestershire or York College. You go to 10 two-week residential blocks, with accommodation, meals and travel paid, and come home at weekends. The rest of the time you’re on site with one of Barratt Redrow’s subcontractors.

You need to live within 45 minutes of the site by public transport, or an hour if you drive. GCSE maths and English at grade 4 are ideal, but not essential.

Construction Support Technician

This apprenticeship is less hands-on with tools and more about planning. You choose one of two paths:

  • Technical (engineering and design): preparing designs, answering site queries and checking drawings match the approved plans.
  • Commercial (quantity surveying and buying): managing materials and labour, preparing tenders and helping surveyors keep projects on budget.

You need to be 16 or over with 5 GCSEs at grade 4, including maths and English.

Higher and degree apprenticeships

If you have some work experience or higher-level qualifications, you can earn a degree while working as a trainee site manager, quantity surveyor, technical specialist or land buyer.

Pay and benefits

Trade apprentices are paid BATJIC rates (the building industry’s agreed apprentice pay) in England and Wales, with London and South East weighting where it applies, and SBATC rates in Scotland. You get 24 days’ holiday plus bank holidays on the trade programme, or 26 as a Construction Support Technician. You also get private medical cover, a tool kit and safety gear.
